I have felt your freinds pain a few times. Wood is never the same percentage in the interior. It may be dryer or wetter. He needed to allow it to acclimate after it was cut before planing or sanding.
We used to glue up narrow alder to make boards and run them thru a big sander, we soon learned that if one was thicker than the rest or didn't line up with the rest, you may as well cut it out because if you try to sand it to an even thickness it would warp.
