I live in vegas and I have a pretty big backyard that currently consists of rocks and dirt. I really don't want to do the desert landscaping thing, I want a tropical backyard. Obviously there will be LOTS of Palms back there soon, any other ideas?

Artificial turf? Talk to a local landscaper for more ideas, I'm sure they deal with what works all the time.

Inspector makes a good point, but I would suggest building a casino and inviting all the friends that you will make from Home Repair Talk.com

Just saying......

rather than doing this you can spare this time and try to go to some other place where you can set your own garden.

Try growing plants that are suitable to be planted in rocky soil. As far as I know, these plants are junipers, pines, aloe plants, and acacia tree. They tend to thrive in rocky or sandy soil because their roots are able to go past the rocks to find the soil. Just try these out.

I would check into artificials.... i think the palms would work but a lot of these people dont relize the soil is has too much alkine in it to grow much... i have found some very nice turf thats what i was thinking of doing...

Dont forget to check with your HOA because we cant even do our (fenced) backyard without approval.... seriously.

If you have soil problems than i would suggest planting in pots. You can move them around or change whats in them if you want. You can also make raised beds to give some height and creativity. Create areas of tropical bliss. Throw in a water feature.
