I'm a first time homebuyer who bought a major fixer upper without any renovation experience at all. My previous tool kit consisted of a screwdriver and a hammer. It's gotten a lot bigger now and even has some power tools 
I have loads of plans for the house and plan on learning to do as much of it myself otherwise currently I'd never be able to afford to get the work done. There are a total of 12 rooms and a basement to redo in an 1800 Sq Ft property.
Most of it is cosmetic but there are some other projects I need to do too.
I'm hoping I've found a forum where I can get good advice from some and warn others of mistakes I've made so they won't make the same.
