Making a deck all by yourself can be a challenging task for all those who do not know carpentry. There should be a concrete plan before beginning to build a deck. This is important because a plan enables you to keep track on the progress of your work. It also helps you to find the right materials needed for deck building.

After planning and getting the materials needed for deck building, these are the essential steps needed in making a deck

1) attach ledger
2) protect ledger
3) set up footings
4) establish post the bases and side rim joists
5) install the front rim and interior joists
6) attach decking

These may seem to be difficult at first but it is much more satisfying to see a deck in front of your house.

There are some ideas for deck and patio sizing that will provide enough room to be comfortable in and still allow you to appreciate your surroundings. In a seating area you will need to design for 10 feet by 10 feet at a minimum. That size will hold a standard sized patio set while still providing for traffic space around the table. For every area you should have at least that space.

With any good deck you are going to want to properly space your ballusters. After much searching I have found two links which greatly helped me in the process.

This one allows you to put in all of your specifications and gives you the center line of each picket to mark on the railing as well as the # of pickets.

Because the above referenced site gives you the remainder inches in a decimal you can use this conversion calculator to obtain the correct fractional inch. It even tells you how to do it without the calculator, if you didn't already know. Of course we're talking about fractional inches so a good guess would work too.

Hope this helps!
