I have exposed hardwood stairs that match the hardwood floors in the house. Recently, I dropped a heavy item on the end of one step, and it cracked the wood along the grain and 3/4 the way across the step about 1.5 in. from the edge. The wood is cracked about halfway down- so the step is still functional, but needs repair.
I'm interested in hearing if this can be fixed, or is a replacement of the step the best approach. I'm worried about matching the stain if I replace it.

Thanks-

Welcome Mike:
Yes, the step is repairable. Use carpenter's wood glue and work out some way to clamp the crack tightly together. Let it set overnight and it should be fine.

I agree with Glenn... make sure everything lines up well while the glue is drying. The glued area are will end up stronger than the wood from my experience.
