I am redoing our deck. The original material was 2x6 cedar planks.
They are being replaced with 5/4 pressure-treated lumber. To correct
for the difference in thickness, is it best to use shims on the beams or
is there a better way to make up for the difference in thickness so that the
side rails mate up with the top surface of the deck.
 
Hello George:
For my money I would put the 5/4 boards down, which only leaves 1/8" difference. (5/4=1-1/4" while a 2x6 is only 6/4 or 1-1/2") If it is still a problem to you a piece of trim like base shoe should cover the vacancy just fine.

Thank you for the information Glenn. I think the deck probably looked great when it was new and would like to help get it back to that state.

Yep, in the lower 48, 5/4" = 1" also.

Sorry, my bad. I knew the 5/4 thickness; I just shot off my big mouth too quickly. So, the difference now is 1/4", that can make a difference but a base shoe will still cover it.:eek:
