Our 50+ year old house has a basement laundry room which came with glued down linoleum (I think) tiles. After a few water heater floods, many tiles have broken or come up altogether, leaving a somewhat sticky residue behind. I will be remodelling the room in a few years, but in the meantime would like a decent floor in there. Can peel and stick tiles work over my old embossed tiles? Should I try to scrape everything off somehow (is there a good non-toxic product for that) and deal with the concrete? Could I paint it or stain it, but still leave the floor in good enough shape to use ceramic tiles later on?
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Just get a single sheet of vinyl cut to fit. Pull all the old tiles up first. Follow the particular manufactures instructions for installation technique.
