How long do sump pumps last? I recently bought a home that is 7 years old and the existing pump in the sump pit is the original builder's grade that's been there since 2002....

The pump works about one pump an hour or an hour and half..... I am debating on replacing it before it dies...... but came to a conflict......

A) if it ain't broke, don't fix it....

B) Replace it but which brand?

Mine is going on 12yrs. now. It only runs a few times after a hard rain or in the early spring when the ground is thawing. I had the same worry that you do, coming home to a basement full of water so I simply put another sump in the crock and set the float so that it kicks in if the primary sump should fail.
