I'm going to start filling dimples ( fist impressions ) in our dry wall and I was wondering the criteria as to when i should use a patch versus putty.

It really depends on the amount of damage to the wall. Are there actual holes or just indentations?

Putty is generally associated with, for and as a wood filler.

Putty coat is a plaster product and as a mixed product can be used in many patching applications.

Drywall compounds, both dry,(longer shelf life) and premixed can successfully be used in patching drywall, plaster as well as many other cementatious products.
