Hi!
We have a small brick corner in the living room, where my folks had put a Franklin Stove. The stove is gone now, but they left the brick, and for many years, it was fine. Just this past year or so, I have noticed some black marks that appear in pairs...two, smudgey, perpendicular lines, all over the brick. I thought it looked like mold, but one mold man we had in, disagreed. But what else could it be?
At any rate, I need to clean the wall, it looks bad, but I want to be careful of what I put on there, as it will soak in, and IF it IS mold, I don't want to make it worse.
Any ideas??
Thank you, Judi

Sounds like water is comming down the chimney. Do you have a chimney cap? Could be creosote acting up through the brick mortar joints.
Contact a local chimney sweep, I would use one from the Chimney guild.

TSP is sold at your local hardware store, pretty harmless and cleans brick just fine.
