I've been away from home for a few months and had shut off my water main. Should I empy my water softner and drain the hot water heater to make sure I'm getting clean water?

do you have a union on the water heater?
after a couple months, critters can grow in the tank,
I would add a 1/8 bleach to the water heater, let it sit overnight then flush the water heater and all the pipes
next time you go out of town leave the water heater ON
it will stay hot and keep the critters from forming
