House Repair community, I wanted to run my problem by you all and see what the community thinks. I purchased my home about two years back and when I did there was about a 3' straight crack in my living room ceiling. I had someone throw some mud and paint on it and needless to say it is back with a vengeance. The crack has slowly grown over the last two years to a total length of about 15' and is about 1/16 - 1/8" wide at points. What is interesting is that it is a series of straight lines and I belive it follows the hip and ridge lines of the roof (pictures linked to below). I welcome everyone's thoughts as to the cause and potential fixes

You need to find another method, that does not require the viewer to login, to view them.

I was able to view them without logging into dropbox. There was a no thanks button to view without logging in.

Can you get into the attic to view the framing? I assume the crack is following the framing as diagonal cracks in sheetrock are pretty rare on ceilings.

Is your attic stick framed with rafters and joists (2x8 - 2x12) or manufactured trusses (2x4)?

Thanks, but there are easy methods of loading photo's on this site, which does not require searching for a work-around.
 
from your pics, it appears you have a flat roof above your ceiling. Is there attic space in between (I should hope so)? Can you show us the cracks without drawing over them? Use the "attach" icon to post them here.
 
They have changed how the do hips with trusses. Newer houses have a corner jack with a bottom cord below the hip.
I think you are seeing truss uplift in the girder that the jacks are attached to.

Looks more like a multiple hip roof to me from image 3.
 
If moisture causes uplift and this is a desert house. oops
More likely the girder had a crown that held it off the center walls and with the weight of the tile roof it has sagged and will sag until the girder sits on the center walls.

And if you think I am guessing, you would be right.
 
If the cracks are where the red lines are on the ceiling, they do not line up with the hips on the roof. A few pics of the attic area would be most beneficial.

You would have to see the truss layout plan or map to know for sure.
That attic will be a nightmare to get around in, I would just ask for a confirmation that it is trusses.
