I'm thinking about renovating the staircase in my house. Right now it has wooden balusters, but I'd like to put in iron. I've never taken on a project like this before, so I'm a little nervous. Does anyone have suggestions on where to begin? Also, does anyone have a suggestion for a place to buy balusters? I'm on a bit of a budget, so finding a good price is a must.
 
Welcome to the site, I would like to see some photos before I tell you, you shouldn't remove the wood. Most lumber yards carry this stuff.
 
If it's a standard stairway it's pretty straight forward. Cut out old balusters , drill holes to fit new balasters. Holes should be deep enought to slide baluster in place without removing handrail. Pick a balaster with trim that you secure with set screw. Glue balusters in place, Lift the baluster up and tighten screw so it can't fall out. Check out the video

I've never tried changing staircase balusters before, so good luck!! I hope you put up before and after photos when you finish. As far as a place to buy balusters goes, you can try http://www.stairsupplies.net/. They have some nice stuff and their prices are fairly reasonable.
