Hi there,

My husband are I are buying our first home. We found an updated home built in 1958. We had our house inspection this weekend and the biggest issue that came up is a crack in the main girder in the basement. The inspector's comment read

"Cracked main girder section noted in heating closet
in basement, needs proper repairs to same by
qualified building contractor.."

I understand what the main girder's role in the house is, but am wondering how this can be replaced/reinforced. Is it a major job? How costly is it? The attached picture is the picture the inspector took.

Thank you!

Need a farther away picture. What is the span, members width?Where is it located? What is it carrying, how wide is the house running perpendicular to it? Be safe, GBR

Welcome Erin:
A steel plate applied to each side of the girder and bolted all the way through would pull the crack back in place and strengthen the girder. Make sure the steel extends to solid bearing on each end.
