Attaching Furring strips to concrete block in shower

I am renovating a house. Two of the tile showers require a complete rebuild. One has one wall and the other two walls on the exterior concrete block. I need to attach a few new furring strips (1 X 2). What is the best way? I got some 2 " nails recommended by the Pro at Lowes, but they seem to be too hard to hammer in all the way.
 
A "pro" suggested you try to drive nails into a concrete block wall?

If it were my house, I'd get a 1/4 inch masonry drill, bore some holes, insert anchors & screw the firring strips in right.

Am I right in assuming you're going to insulate?
 
I just hung drywall in our block wall basement and used 2x2 furring strips. They were attached with Tapcon screws at the top and bottom with construction adhesive all the way down.

I'd suggest you be selective when asking for advice from any "Pro" wearing a colored apron at most big box stores. Unless they happen to be burned out trades people, usually their advice leaves a lot to be desired.

But, they are usually great at pointing me to the men's room.
