Hi, a few years ago I made an attempt to repair my parent's kitchen floor that failed. Their old vinyl tiles had been coming up off the OSB underlayment, so I ripped up all the tiles, smoothed out the gouges with some kind of patching stuff, put down some kind of liquid adhesive (I don't remember exactly what) and put down new self-adhesive vinyl tiles. I had some very incompetent help and they were walking on the OSB after the adhesive had been put down, and they placed the tiles such that many were overlapping by a millimeter or so. Three years later, most of the tiles have come up again.

Should I give the tiles another go and just do it myself? Is there some kind of extra underlayment I should put down on the OSB first? Should I try another type of flooring altogether? What about vinyl planks?

Thanks in advance!

Can you recommend a type of underlayment? I've read some people use 1/4" plywood but I'd prefer to use something much thinner.

Tempered Masonite is 1/8".

If you use 1/4" I'd glue it and nail it (or screws), a lot, to keep it flat. Don't want spongy spots. I've had 1/4" luan under some of our floors for nearly 30 years. I glued it and screwed it every 6"-8" under ceramic tile flooring with 0 problems. (as long as the subflooring under the luan it sound).
