Hi everyone, our hot water tank is leaking from one of the top nipples(?). It was literally spraying water all over the place; not just a little leak. I tried tightening it but that didn't do much. It was already really tight. What should I do?

Thanks

You probably have a damaged compression fitting. Cut water off and remove and inspect the sealing surfaces. Take it to the hard ware store to get a new one.

Certainly turn off the water for now. Inspect the fitting for cracks. Do you have the tools to replace that fitting? It requires a crimping tool which you can rent in lieu of buying it for a one time thing. Just buy new fitting and re-install.

OR ... If not, there may be a chance you can apply teflon tape to the threads and re-install it tightly.

Get back to us on this one ...

Spraying water is a bad thing ...

Have you tried pipe dope yet? On a hot water heater I had, this was the only thing that stopped a leak at a fitting. And it held up.
