Help with wall behind baseboard

At my job I have been asked to repair a bit of damaged wall behind the baseboard. When I push the baseboard up to the wall there is a small gap between the two. What is the most effective way to fix this?

What type of wall are you talking about and how big is the gap between the baseboard and wall. What type of material is the baseboard.

I'm honestly not sure what kind of wall it is nor the baseboard, but I think the hole is about 1.5" across by 3" down
