by my sink there was water damage that was damaged long ago.....the leak was stopped and the previous repair was patched with joint compound slathered on like messy cake frosting with no intention to match the old splatter/ flattened texture......any tips on how to match the old text?

Sanding the old repair flat is a start. If the main wall is just "bumpy" you have an easy solution. If it is troweled on with a few slight voids, then it is easier.

The troweled finish is a "skip trowel" finish. Get a quart of drywall compound and scoop some onto a plastic plate. Add just a little water and mix with a drywall knife. You want it a little wetter than the compound in the tub. Scoop some of this and lightly drag it across the repaired area. If you do it right, there might be some matching voids. Feather it out into the main wall for a seamless finish.

The "bumpy" finish was shot onto the wall. You can buy a can of spray texture and practice on a piece of cardboard. Adjust the nozzle until you get a pattern that matches. Spray while moving the can smoothly. Do not sit in one place. If it looks overdone, wipe it all off with a slightly damp rag and try again. Once dry, here is the trick .... Using a metal drywall knife, scrape the fix holding the knife between 45-90 degrees. This should help blend the repair with the old.

Hope this helps ! :D
