With the recent storms in MI, several of my shutters were ripped from my house. I have removed all the old ones, bought new ones, which are wider than the originals. Do I need to put putty/silicone in the old holes before installing the new shutters to prevent water/rodent damage, or is it ok to just drill new ones and leave the old holes as is?

I think it will depend on siding material if its really necessary. Its cheap so I may do it regardless. I would use color matched caulk if they will show. if hidden then just any old caulk for exterior use will be fine.

thx! and the advise on matching caulk...good idea, although i don't think they'll show but i'm a little fussy 'bout that stuff! so glad i found this forum, am single woman and have had several bad "handyman/repairman" problems...taking advantage of my non-knowledge of these things! thanks again!
