I don't know how to describe it other than you're looking at the roof boards when you're looking at the ceiling. I'm thinking about doing a better job of insulating this early-70's, cheaply built house. But, since the roof is ~40% of the typical loss, it doesn't make sense to me to do the walls. Winter heating is currently wood stove and space heaters. Summer cooling is swamp cooler. Those don't want or need a tight envelope. I don't want to cover the ceiling- it's one of the nicest features of the place. The roof was re-shingled not too long ago, so I can't see taking them off to insulate on the top side. Make sense? What do you think?
