I'm currently in the process of switching out my ceramic tile floor to a porcelain "wood" plank. The new tile has texture, which could help so it's not slippery. I've read that slate is brittle and requires maintenance. If it's in the whole house, it could be tedious to reseal twice a year.

Wood plank tile is very low maintenance. Once you seal it, you are good to go for years, provided you give it an occasional mopping.
