I've just purchased a home and the entire upstairs has 'custom' paneling. The panels are small in size, at an angle and only come half way up the wall. I feel like it really closes the rooms in and would love a solution to spruce it up. I've read a few places that painting it helps tremendously, I guess my only concern is that if we paint it and it doesn't look right... we would have even uglier 'custom' paneling. Recommendations?
 
I think it would be nicer if you can take some picture of your custom paneling so that we could give more useful suggestion. By the way, we've also painted our custom panel but we paint it with spray paint and we used proper masking so that the other part will not be ruined.
 
I'll snap some pictures this evening. It's not hateful, but because of the size of the house, it really closes everything in. Thanks :)
