First timer, here.

I recently purchased a home built in 1968. The home has been a rental property for several years and now I have decided to purchase it and began tearing out the cheap laminate flooring that covered the entire house.

Half of the house was originally carpeted and underneath that I found this material (4'x8' sheets) nailed to the subfloor. It is almost the consistency of dense ceiling tiles - very papery and fibrous. (See pictures).

I have already removed an entire room of this, and have more to do.

Any thoughts?

I don’t see any seams in it as if it was put down in sheets. I don’t know the product and I would also have it tested.

Looks like celotex. Some of it contained asbestos. I would have it tested.

Samfloor knows his stuff. If he recommends to get it tested, then by all means, please get it tested!

Excellent. Please let us and all future members know the outcome.

Wow, fast results.

Asbestos free!

Thank you, everyone! Well worth the $18 lab fee. Found out in less than an hour!

Glad you got it tested... but that's

We use it all the time for soundproofing, and even better..protecting our floors and walls on the job.
Looks like someone installed it for sound deadening.
Glad you checked , and what a Deal!!
Now get to work!
