I want to take out the mantle above my gas fireplace. It is attached to the wall. It is painted like the wall and it wraps around one side. Also the front of the wall above the fireplace is framed so that the middle is recessed. How do I take it apart without damaging the existing wall?

A picture would help.I've built a lot of mantles and depending on the structure have put lags into the studs with fender washers on them that got thru the back of the mantle in keyhole slots. They were very stable but would lift straight up and out.Are there any visible fasteners from the front or anything that looks like wood plugs?
