Hi! I have an ancient A.O.Smith gas boiler (HW-300 A)and I'm trying to light it this afternoon. It's not given me troubles before but this time, it's acting up. I can light the pilot flame ok but when I release the Safety/Reset button, the flame goes out. The instructions say to hold the button for 30 seconds. I held it for a minute but the pilot flame still goes out.
What could be the problem?

IF THE PILOT WILL NOT STAY LIT AFTER SEVERAL TRIES, TURN
THE GAS CONTROL KNOB TO "OFF" AND CALL YOUR SERVICE
TECHNICIAN OR GAS SUPPLIER.

This should be the next line in the instructions.

The flame heats a little cylinder shaped thing that's called a thermocouple that in turn keeps the gas on. It's a safety measure in case it blows out. Chances are the thermocouple is bad. It's not to hard of a DIY job.

I second the worn out couple. Last replacement I bought was $20. Once in a blue moon you can get by if you hold it for 2 minutes longer.
