Replacing molding on exterior wood columns

I need to replace the molding on my exterior wood columns. I don't own or am I handy with many power tools. My columns are standard 8" squares (I've double checked each column & side).

I plan to go to the home improvement store to buy the molding & try to get them to pre-cut it. Is there another way I can fasten the molding without since I don't have a finishing/ nail gun? I'm scared I may split it with a regular hammer.
 
Pre-drill holes where you want the nails to be.
Use a drill bit diameter smaller than the nail and drill to a depth about 1/4 inch short of the length of the nails.
Drip a bit of wood glue on the nails right before you drive them in and it will lubricate the nail and help keep it from popping back out.
