Ac problem- inside fan shuts of outside unit keeps running
Outside unit keeps running and frost develops on pipes
Cooling stops
When thermostat is shut off manually and pipes allowed to thaw then restarted
Runs fine until it hits temp inside then freezes again
Happens more at night
Was thinking dirty contactor but open to suggestion
Haven't tried to fix yet
Help!

Can you make this happen? If so, watch the compressor/fan contactor when the inside unit shuts off and see if the contactor is disengaging. If not, then check contactor coil voltage. If no voltage when this happens then replace the contactor. The icing up may be from the compressor continuing to run without the blower running to keep the unit from freezing up. Does the blower fan turn off before t-stat temp is reached? If so the problem could be with the air handler and not the compressor.
You'll have to run the system and check the symptoms to isolate the problem.

Thanks for both replies not the freon had that checked
Can't make it happen and thermostat always reaches temp sometimes exceeds it
Walked into 60 degrees when it was set on 72 the other day
Sounds like cofactors

Again many thanks

To replace the contactor is just guessing at the problem and throwing money at it until the problems is corrected.
More troubleshooting and inspection is in order.
However, for around $20 you can replace the contactor and see what happens.
Make sure to get a 30A, DPST contactor.
