The electric power company installed a surge protector in my meter center box.

Is it now necessary to use individual surge protectors on my computer, etc. or
is everything in my house protected from power surges after the Electric
Power Company installed their surge in main meter? They installed and
furnished it free of charge.

Yes, I would keep a high quality surge protector on your computer and expensive big screen. Why take the chance? It does no harm.

I agree with CMV, especially if you're in an area prone to lighting. Surge protectors are designed to give up their life when you take a lightning strike. They aren't resettable and once the MOVs in the units do their job, they become useless. There is also the potential of a let through voltage even when it's new, depending where the lightning strikes in relation to your house.
The best protection is a system approach. Installed on the house and each device is the best way to get optimal protection.

Thanks to each of you for your reply. I can now see why both are needed.
