A few years back, there was quite a widespread problem with composite materials used for decking. Apparently, the mfg decided to vary the product mix, substituting a lower quality of recycled plastics. My mother-in-law was one of those unfortunate enough to get stuck.
I understand the company went under but was started up again by another individual who is again making a quality product.
But really, when times are tough, people cut corners. I can tell the difference between #2 and #3 wood. I know of no way to tell a good composite from a bad composite other than buying it and waiting a couple of years.

Attic, you are being WAY to general. That would be like me saying that natural wood will get dry-rot. Or be attacked by termites, or will splinter and warp.

Here are a few of the various makers:
EON, VerandaT ChoiceDek, LP WeatherBest, GeoDeck, and Epoch Evergrain, Trex. And those are just the most common names.

Not all composite decking is created equal, just as not all wood is the same.

Here is a consumer reports page about decking.
