I am building several gates for my fence. I used 1x4 as rail on my fence. And then I took another 1x4 and sandwiched the fence board so that both sides of the fence look the same.

I was wondering if it would be okay to use 1x4's for the gates as well. I thought about using 2x4 for more stability, but I didn't know if it would really be needed. The gate will only be 3-4 ft wide and 4 ft. tall, nothing too major. Suggestions?

Go 2x4's. For Fencing, 1x's are fine for the skin but not anything structural inbetween - unless you are placing 4x4 posts 2' on center!! 1x's split, sag and totally have a mind of their own - they have no support staying power. They are not made for being anything close to being structural.
