I just came from a house that had 2-wire w/ground in a box for the stove. The resident had a new stove that is 3-wired w/ground. Does he need to run new wire to the outlet? If I remember correct, you need to have that neutral for the newer models.
 
most new units I install come with the grnd and neut tied together. You only seperate these if you have four wire. And on corded ovens they do not come with cord connected, when you go to hook cord to oven you find the same thing in there. The grn is landed on neut terminal. So go for it.
 
The installation manual for the new stove should have a three wire installation info.
