I had an old (1976) GE electric cooktop that I'm replacing with a new Whirlpool. The GE had 3 wires, red, green and a copper wire. The new Whirlpool has 3 red, green and black. The connection box has four wires coming out two black, one grey, and one un-insalated metal wire I marked the red & green wires with tape to tell the differance please advise Please. Thank you in advance.
 
What does the manual say about how to hook it up?
Why are you marking the red and green with tape?
 
You are working with a 220V circuit, no neutral.
Two hots (black & black or black and red).
Ground (green or bare copper).
Doesn't matter which hot goes to either black on the unit.
The source of your confusion is that you don't have a true 220V wire.
CHECK THE MANUAL AND SEE WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT WIRING THE OLD 3 WIRE HOOKUP TO A NEW 4 WIRE HOOKUP.
I suspect you will be attaching red to black, green to black and bare to grey & bare.
 
Looks like another ask and never come back.
If you truly have black, green and bare coming from the wall then you need a new feed for the cooktop from the panel.
