My deck is 32ft long and the joist are 16ft 2X10's on 16" center. the deck is supported by 5 metal poles at the end. On top of the metal poles there is a 4X6 and on top of that is 2X8's doubled up that the joists are nailed to. Deck was built in 1986 and at the center of the deck, the joist keep coming loose and the end plate kicks out. Had repaired twice and the problem has come back. Thinking of sistering every other 2X10 and using steel cables and turnbuckles to secure end plate to the house. This deck is on top of another deck, and the only other option is to put poles in the middle of the bottom deck to hold up the upper deck.

Does the steel cable sound like it would work??

thanks

Dude- that's a rough problem. Post some pictures?

I agree with deckbarn. Really, all decks need post to support them and direct bearing is the only way.
