I have a tiled bath wall and want to install a permanent shower curtain rod as opposed to the expandable one. What kid of drill would I use to go through the tile, and are there any tips to prevent the tile from cracking?

Use a carbide tipped masonry drill. Break the glaze with a careful tap of a center punch to center the hole. Start with a smaller pilot if the diameter is over about 3/8". Don't force the drill, let it wear through slowly.
