One of the projects my wife and I want to start on is real 3/4" oak flooring for our kitchen, dining, front hall, and front 1/2 bath. The dining room is carpet, but the rest is builders grade vinyl flooring. Can I lay the wood down over top of the vinyl or does the vinyl have to be removed first? It's plywood under the vinyl. Could the vinyl act as a moisture barrier?

You probably could lay the wood atop the vinyl, but I wouldn't.

Real hardwood flooring is too expensive, and too difficult to install, to take chances.
