So.. I have a wood deck that has some age to it.. around 5 years or so I guess! This summer I have noticed shavings of wood ALL over the place on the deck.. anyone think this possibly sounds like a termite issue? I can't seem to find anything thats being eaten away at.. so its kinda odd cause I can't for the life of me figure out where all the wood shavings are coming from!

Hi Miz

The wood shavings could be caused by termites or by degradation if the wood was treated badly (I'l not saying it's you^^)
You said your boat was only 5 years old so I dought it's degredation.
I treated my deck with anti-insect product but if you haven't, well under the planks there might be termites hidden, in witch case you need to act fast and drastically. You can call a specialist or do it yourself.
Good luck!!

You should call an expert to be sure as it can be very dangerous for you and for family if there are termites eating away at you deck.

Yes, 5 years isn't quite old enough for the wood to be degraded. It could very well be termites, or it could be a species of ant that eats wood (carpenter). I had that problem in my house (luckily not in my deck). I did call Terminix to treat the house. Not sure if they would treat a deck as well or what the cost would be. It would certainly be cheaper to treat that than a whole house though. The shavings are a bad sign, however, so you should call someone in to take a look at it! Good luck!

5 years does sound too soon, but I would say that it would depend on how well maintained you have kept the deck. If you have neglected it, then it is possible to start seeing this wear and tear. If not then it may be something else. I would consult a professional ( I am currently thinking of the Terminex ad where the house is talking to the homeowners). LOL

Im going to agree. Get this checked out soon as possible. You never know where they could be. For example, in your house.

I must agree that 5 years doesn't seem to be old enough to show any degradetion at all. Remember that wood lasts for lots of years. Depending on where you live things degradate faster than in other places but I don't think this would happen in 5 years.
I think you have a termite problem... It is summer.

Do you have a cat!

My cat went nuts and started slicing at my wood deck. I was always finding deep scratchs and buts in the wood. Couldn't figure it out untill I seen here on day. Be careful of those cats!;)

According to my opinion you should call an expert to be sure as it can be very dangerous.
