Default Tub/Shower Faucet Relocation Help

I have started a project to renew and relocate the tub / shower faucet, shower head, and tub filler.

The problem I have discovered is the way this house was built. There is a single wall stud running dead center to the tub. The next two studs are 12 and 16 inches to either side of the center stud.

So the question is, how do I install new fixtures so that they are centered on the tub?

Install a new stud in a position you can work with and then remove all or parts of the one in the way.
