None, it's good on it's own.

Well I'm going to try some clean up on the grill this weekend.

I have to get new grates, but then I will repaint again.

Clean the surface with TSP, Purple Power, or Krud Kutter before you attempt to repaint. Then apply a deglosser if you don't want to sand it. The smoke may be coming from insufficient curing time. Check the manufacturer's information on cure time. You are most likely driving uncured, unbonded resins out of the film at the high temperature and it will never cure properly as a result. It usually takes about 7-14 days for a full cure even after the paint dries before the resins fully bond with the solids and build a tenacious film.

I have a 2010 gmc sierra that already has 20'' rockstar rims (matte black), now i want to take the grill off and paint it black because its chrome.

Well I'm still getting smoking from the paint when I fire this thing up.

It's a huge pit so I think the paint might not be approved for that high of a temperature.

Is there an industrial quality grill paint anyone has used and can recommend?
