Default Proper Surface Prep & Coating for Corroded Galvanized Metal

I have an exterior light fixture on a breezeway ceiling that appears to be made out of galvanized metal. The surface appears to be slightly corroded underneath areas where the paint has flaked off, as noted by it's dull, splotchy appearance.

I was planning to scrape it with a wire brush, then feather it with Emery cloth before priming with a zinc oxide primer, followed by a 2 topcoats of acrylic latex paint.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a more durable surface preparation technique or coating application?
