Default frustrated, are my expectations too unreasonable

I want to change the color of my kitchen cabinets. they are currently light brown, i think red oak with natural stain over them. I pretty much hate them. I want them to be white, but not stark, bright paint white. i want them to have a look of stained wood but with a lot of coverage. i love the look of dark stain with the wood grain visible and want this look with white. the paint guy at lowes (i know i know) mixed a sample size of minwax natural with lots of white pigment in it and it took about 4 coats to get the desired color i want. as you all may know, 4 coats of stain takes FOREVER to dry. I have tried the whitewash pickling stain and it also does not give me the coverage i want. I guess what i want is the coverage of paint with the texture of stain, anyone, anyone

Welcome to the forum Sabrelou.

My first thought was white wash but you shot it down. You could do a thorough job cleaning, scuff sanding, priming and then a couple coats of thinned down paint, but you will find you are still putting multiple coats on them, and it may not be the look you are striving for. Sometimes there just is no quick one and done solutions to achieve what you want done. Is the pigmented stain giving you the desired look? If so then you might as well bite the bullet and keep on flowing. Post some pics of your progress I am interested in seeing your project.

Default final solution

i have opted to just bite the bullet and paint. i have 1 set of cabinets done in 2 coats of behr satin with primer in swiss coffee and am 99% happy with it. with new hardware and new granite counters i am certain it will be beautiful.

How about posting some pictures and showing off your work?

Sounds like it is working out nicely. I would not have went with the bear but either way sounds like it is coming along.
