Return Vent is whistling

Hi All,

I just got AC installed, when it kicks on the return air duct which is 24" x 24" starts whistling. I took the metal grate off to see if that was the issue and it was not.

I also tried moving my hand around the opening to see if I could affect the sound but nothing changed.

How can I track down and muzzle the whistle? Thanks!

A better question is why would you want to waste your time when all you have to do is call back the person who installed it and have them eliminate the issue ?

The end of a garden hose acts like a short-range microphone. Have one person listening at the end while the other feeds the hose into the duct.
Please not to be feeding the hose into the air handler squirrel cage impeller! Mucho peligroso!

Could be the air velocity in your ductwork (measured in Feet Per Minute) is excessive.

I am going to double check but i think i know what it is. I attached a 2x4 around the 24x24 duct and used winter seal to get a tight seal around the duct and the ceiling. It works great, but the ductwork is not a perfect square so two of the sides are bent a little like a banana. if I flex one of the banana's into a straight line the whistling goes away.

Right now this is just theory, i will verify last night.
