Hi,

We're attempting our first vinyl floor installation in a bathroom approximately 6'x6', and we've laid a plywood underlayment and nailed it down with ring-shank nails according to the underlayment manufacturer's specifications.

In order to fill the recesses and minor imperfections, we purchased Planipatch, but we had a hard time getting it to smooth out...there were areas that were higher (ridges of patch), so we sanded the entire surface. There were also still recessed areas, so we applied a second coat of patch. We fear that we may have put it on too thick even with the first coat, and the second coat may have made things worse.

We're looking for suggestions as to how best to proceed. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Exactly what was your application process? Did you buy the ready mix or mix your own?

We bought the dry mix and mixed our own, then applied it with a trowel.

If it is high it will show to some degree in the finished floor. With a wide enough trowel you should be able to feather it out. at this point you have to sand it down or add more and feather it out.

Sounds like you mixed it too thick.
