I have my treated pine deck stripped, cleaned and prepared for new stain. My plan is to use PPG Alkyd/Oil Semi-transparent stain. I'm curious if there is any reason I can't use a urethane/acrylic sealer over the stain for durability and a little gloss.

A friend of mine has some such product on his deck and it looks great, and has lasted for several years now. Unfortunately, he's not a DIYer and has no idea what products were used. My best guess is what I'm suggesting for my own deck.

I've used Ben Moore Arborcoat semi trans with the clear coat designed to go over it on a couple of newly constructed decks. Looked very good. Rather than use what might be two incompatible products, you might consider a "package" like the Arborcoat that you know won't be a problem.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll check into those products. I'm hoping to find something that can last longer than a couple years. Stripping old stain makes me want to go splurge on composite decking.

Here is the Technical Data Sheet for that PPG Product. http://buyat.ppg.com/rep_pafpainttools_files/porter/tdb/PP1852.pdf As long as it is not a surface sealant, and Clear-Seal can still penetrate, it should be fine. We'd be happy to send you a sample of Clear-Seal to do a small test area to be sure. OR -

An alternative would be to use our Color-Lok or Tinted Waterproofers as a Deep Penetrating waterproofer/ "stain" which has the benefits you seem to be looking for. Then top coat with Clear-Seal or Wet Look. If you wish, call or email for personal one on one help further. https://rainguard.com

Correction to my reply: If he is going to use a solvent based stain he has to stick with a solvent based urethane. We don't make that type of product. All Rainguard products are Water-based...

Here are links to our stains you can use if you wish that compliment each other.

Color-Lok https://rainguard.com/product-category/product-lines/color-lok-stains/
Clear-Seal https://rainguard.com/product-category/product-lines/architectural-grade-sealers/

or -

Tinted Waterproofers https://rainguard.com/product-category/project/stain-my-deck/page/2/
Wet Look https://rainguard.com/shop/consumer/exterior-sealants/wet-look-high-gloss-sealer/

Hope that helps.
