After wrestling with a stuck gate valve, I finally got it to close...I think all the way. I hooked a hose up to it to the drain cock at the bottom of the water heater. But can't budge any of the connections on top - the cold inlet or hot outlet. Any tricks to getting these loose?
A friend is bringing a new water heater tomorrow, so I want to get this on out soon.

not enough info.

get a bigger wrench

Just cut the hot and cold pipe connections as close to the heater as possible.
You will want all new dielectric fittings with the new install.
