I"ve had a Simer 1/2 hp cast iron submersible sump pump for about 6 years. I noticed about 3 years ago it wasn't working. I didn't have time to mess with it until now. It stopped working I think within the warranty period, but that's up now.
It hasn't been in any heavy duty use since I've had it, and it seems to be a well built sturdy pump.
I'm not sure why there's a separate electrical cord for the pump and what appears to be the float switch - that plugs into the other one at the end of the other cord.
Is there a way to bypass the float switch or otherwise check this thing?

That sounds like a piggyback setup. Just plug in the plug for the pump, but it will not turn off with out unplugging it.
