I still have the pieces of wood that were cut off. I believe they are 2x2's. I am referring to the vertical posts that have been cut off that are in front of the vent stack.

Do I use fasteners like this? Or is there a better way?

Mending plates?

Just put another beside each that reach the floor and overlap the other by a couple ft and screw them together. Then if you want you could also fill in the missing piece.

How come I can't find 1"x1" strips of wood in stores? Like the ones holding up these shelves. Best I can do is find 1"x2" 's and cut them lengthwise.

If you do that you will have 3/4 X 3/4. Get some 5/4 and rip your strips on the table saw or go to a trim shop and tell them what you need.

That's what I'm looking for is 3/4" x 3/4". I thought that's what a 1"x1" is.

What is a 5/4? I don't have a table saw and that's too expensive to buy for just this one purpose.

So to buy 3/4" x 3/4", I would need to go to a special trim shop?
