The term for the technique is called "Keeping a wet edge". It means you never apply new wet paint over new dry, or almost dry paint. That includes cutting in. When you cut in you should have someone immediately behind you rolling over the cut-in wet paint. Also, no excessive pressure and don't skimp and try and stretch the paint. Lastly, use a top quality paint. Valspar is now, I think, a store brand for the big blue store. The name came from a top quality floor finish if memory serves me.
Try recoating with Benjamin Moore and see how you do.
