Default drop ceilings and can lights

I'm putting in a drop ceiling and have can lights to install. How can the lights be installed? The drop ceiling is about 3" from bottom of joists due to 7' headroom. Do you install new construction cans in the joists and then the trim will be installed on the drop ceiling? Is there enough trim ring/cone to cover the 3"? What is the best way to do this? Thanks.

I'd anchor them to the joists somehow. If the fixture 'gives' too much vertically the bezel ring sometimes cannot be fully seated.
