I have a crack which has developed in my front porch which I need to address. I'm planning on sealing the concrete, but do I need to repair the crack first? Even if it's something as simple as putting some sand into it to help hide it once it is sealed. Didn't know if the sealer would help it disappear visually or if there was another step I needed to do.

This is my first attempt at sealing concrete, so any and all help is appreciated, including any recommendations on brand, application methods, prep work, etc.

Thanks.

Here's a wider shot of the front porch for context.

Not sure what to do with the crack, the clear searlers are like water so not likely going to seal cracks. I've used both solvent based and water based, both did a good job but the solvent based will have singing and dancing until it's dry, really strong fumes.

Thanks for the heads up! I did speak with a friend who knows a little about concrete. His suggestion was to brush the porch real hard to free up some existing sand and work it back and forth over the crack to help fill it in prior to sealing it. More to come as this project continues.

Just an observation ... The pic with the post bottom makes me think your problem is more than cosmetic. You may have a structural issue with the stress on the base of the post without sufficient support underneath. The crack is where I would suspect it should be on that basis.

You may be able to cover the crack ... but will it come back.

Additoinal pics of the underside would be helpful to show exactly where the post bottom lands relative to the overhang. If this turns out to be the cause of the crack, you might have to do some repair which includes a footer and forming directly underneath the post bottom.

Other eyes might see this and disagree ...

There are some maybes. there dosn't appear to be cracks in the brick. But then is the brick carrying the load, is the foundation behind this, is there a room below the porch. Or was the post sitting on a piling before the porch was built.
